Meta Launches Super PAC to Influence California AI Regulation

Meta is entering California's political arena with a significant investment, launching a super PAC aimed at influencing the state's approach to artificial intelligence regulation. Dubbed "Mobilizing Economic Transformation Across California," the PAC will receive tens of millions in funding from the social media giant. This move signals a proactive effort to promote policies that Meta believes will foster innovation and prevent what it views as overly restrictive regulations.

Brian Rice, Meta's VP of public policy and the head of the new PAC, has voiced concerns that California's regulatory environment could stifle AI progress and jeopardize the state's leadership in the tech sector. The company's lobbying efforts earlier in the year included targeting state senator Scott Wiener's SB-53 bill.

This bill proposed requiring AI firms to disclose safety protocols and report safety incidents. Meta also played a role in the defeat of the Kids Online Safety Act last year.

The formation of this super PAC reflects a growing trend in Silicon Valley, with other industry leaders also stepping up their political engagement. Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI's Greg Brockman, for example, have pledged $100 million to a new pro-AI super PAC.

Meta's move goes beyond simply influencing specific legislation. The company has already made donations to various candidates and is now setting its sights on influencing statewide elections, including the 2026 gubernatorial race. This suggests a long-term strategy to shape the political landscape in California and ensure a favorable environment for AI development and deployment.
