2026 Audi RS E-Tron GT: Breathtaking Electric Performance

Audi's evolution in the electric vehicle market has culminated in a true performance masterpiece: the 2026 RS E-Tron GT Performance. This isn't just an electric car; it's a four-door grand tourer that redefines rapid acceleration and delivers an exhilarating driving experience.

Boasting a staggering 912 horsepower generated by its dual motors and a redesigned rear motor, the RS E-Tron GT Performance offers breathtaking power on demand. One of our editors described the experience as a complete recalibration of one's understanding of quickness, a sentiment backed by a verified 0-60 mph time of just 2.2 seconds. Another editor, comparing it favorably to the Porsche Taycan, suggests it's a criminally underrated vehicle in the electric performance segment.

Range anxiety is largely a thing of the past, thanks to a lighter, larger battery pack with enhanced chemistry and cooling. The EPA rates the RS E-Tron GT Performance at 278 miles, but our own testing revealed an impressive 294 miles – a rare overachievement of the official estimate. Charging speeds have also been significantly improved, with a peak charging capacity of 320 kilowatts.

The test vehicle we evaluated featured a striking red exterior finish that highlighted its contemporary design. Inside, the cabin was a sophisticated blend of black and gray, adorned with premium materials such as leather, suede, and forged carbon fiber. Unlike some competitors, Audi has wisely retained physical buttons for essential functions like climate control, creating more usable space on the center console. The inclusion of manually adjustable air vents is a welcome touch. The only minor letdown is the on-screen graphics, which could benefit from a refresh to match the visual appeal of the new Audi A6.

A standout feature is the active damper control suspension, which automatically raises the car's ride height when a door is opened, facilitating easier entry and exit. While opinions were divided on its practicality versus novelty, its delayed activation sometimes detracted from its potential convenience.

Despite its high-performance RS designation, the ride quality is surprisingly comfortable. The RS E-Tron GT Performance feels exceptionally planted and responsive on winding roads, thanks to an adaptive suspension system that effectively mitigates squat, dive, and body roll. However, the brakes could inspire more confidence when hard stopping is needed.

The sleek roofline does impact rear headroom slightly, but the stylish design arguably makes it a worthwhile trade-off. The trunk opening is somewhat restricted, but the inclusion of a front trunk (frunk) provides additional cargo space. Oddly, the frunk release button is located on the driver's door panel, accessible only when the door is open.

Despite a few minor shortcomings and a premium price tag, the RS E-Tron GT Performance represents Audi at its best. It delivers exceptional power, a captivating driving experience, and a distinctive personality that sets it apart in the electric vehicle landscape.

This evaluation was part of our annual Car of the Year (COTY) testing, where vehicles are assessed based on six criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value, and performance of the intended function. To be eligible, vehicles must be either completely new or significantly revised.
